TEHRAN: The second round of indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States (US) has kicked off in the Italian capital, Rome, where the two sides will discuss the Islamic Republic's civilian nuclear programme and the termination of American sanctions against the country.
According to the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA), Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi arrived in Rome early on Saturday for the second round of the talks, hosted by Oman's embassy in Rome. The first round was held in the Omani capital, Muscat, last Saturday.
The talks are led by Araqchi and Steve Witkoff, the US President's special envoy to the Middle East.
Iran has consistently said that any deal must ensure the termination of sanctions and address its core concerns, including guarantees and protection from future unilateral US withdrawals.
The US unilaterally pulled out of a multilateral agreement with Iran in 2018, during President Donald Trump's first term, and initiated a "maximum pressure" campaign against the Islamic Republic.
