Some customers are getting their Girl Scout cookies by drone
Girl Scouts in Christiansburg, Virginia, are delivering the famous cookies by drone.
In the small town of Christiansburg, Virginia, the traditional cookies sold by the Girl Scouts are this year available for delivery by drone. This experiment is the result of a collaboration with Wing, a subsidiary of Alphabet, the parent company of Google.
Instead of being sold door to door by the young Girl Scouts, the cookies are this year coming to customers by air, specifically by drone. In addition to the cool tech innovation, it is also a question of protecting the population by avoiding contact as the covid-19 pandemic continues. Delivering the cookies by drone is clearly safer in 2021 than going door-to-door. Since March 2020, door-to-door cookie sales have been suspended nationwide, and cookies are available to be ordered online.
Wing took the initiative of contacting the Girl Scouts of Virginia Skyline to launch this unprecedented operation and help them sell as many, if not more, cookies than in previous years. Their one-meter wingspan drones are capable of flying at speeds of up to 110 mph and traveling about 20 km. They can also carry a package weighing up to 1.5 kg, which is more than enough for these cookies.
This operation is expected to last until the end of May 2021, with Wing committing to deliver at least 3,000 boxes of cookies. The sale of these cookies is used to fund scouting activities throughout the year.
