Strong earthquake strikes Japan's Kuril Islands

A strong earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, struck the Kuril Islands in Japan at 1.24am Monday, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

It said the epicentre of the quake was 557km northeast of Asahikawa in Japan and 5,239km northeast of Kudat in Sabah.

The quake did not pose any threat of a tsunami, it added.
