Thailand announces arrests in human trafficking, eyeing better grade in TIP next year
SOMYOT: We want the US or European Union to see that we have acted to tackle human trafficking as part of the national agenda.
The Thai police have announced the arrest of five people linked to a prostitution trafficking ring, mindful it is one of many steps the government needs to take towards improving its record and position in the United States (US) Trafficking In Persons (TIP) Report.
Thai police chief Pol Gen Somyot Poompanmoung said the case would be included in a report submitted by the Thai Government for inclusion in the next TIP report.
"We want the US or European Union to see that we have acted to tackle human trafficking as part of the national agenda," he said in a press conference here today.
At the press conference, the suspects comprising a 25-year-old man and four women aged between 25 and 39, were shown to the media.
They were arrested separately but are members of one syndicate.
Another four suspects, two Singaporean and two Chinese nationals are on the run.
