Thailand halts peace deal with Cambodia after landmine injures two

BANGKOK: Thailand says it is suspending its peace deal with neighbouring Cambodia after a landmine injured two Thai soldiers near the border.
The Thai army reported that the explosion in Sisaket province left one soldier severely injured.
In a press conference, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul said security threats along the border have not eased. He announced that Thailand will freeze all activities under the Kuala Lumpur peace accords, saying they were “unable to proceed further.”
Anutin is expected to visit the injured soldiers tomorrow and chair a meeting to reassess Thailand’s position on the accord.
The suspension comes as both sides had been preparing to withdraw heavy weapons from border zones and begin joint landmine clearance operations between November and December.
The move also comes less than a month after the two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in Kuala Lumpur in late October.
The peace deal was intended to end months of hostilities following border clashes in July that killed 43 people and displaced more than 300,000 on both sides.
Under the agreement, the next steps included the planned release of 18 Cambodian soldiers detained in Thailand.
