BANGKOK: Thailand says hostilities with Cambodia persist, a day after it suspended its peace deal following a landmine blast that injured four Thai soldiers.
The Thai army said the suspension is necessary to safeguard the country’s right to self-defence.
Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul confirmed that the release of 18 captured Cambodian troops, a key element of the peace plan, will also be delayed.
Bangkok added that the decision will be formally reported to Malaysia and the U.S., which oversaw the signing of the ceasefire agreement at the 47th ASEAN Summit.
Cambodia’s Defence Ministry meanwhile expressed regret over the incident, saying the landmine was a relic from past conflicts.
It added that frontline forces from both sides remain in contact and that the situation on the ground is calm, while reaffirming its commitment to the ceasefire deal.
