WASHINGTON: US President Donald Trump has said that the signing of a declaration on the settlement of the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia will take place in his presence immediately upon his arrival in Malaysia.

AI Brief
  • Trump is visiting Malaysia to sign a peace deal between Cambodia and Thailand, which he helped broker.
  • He expressed condolences to Thailand following the death of Queen Mother Sirikit and adjusted plans to accommodate the signing.
  • Trump will also attend the ASEAN Summit and meet with Malaysian PM Anwar Ibrahim to discuss trade and regional cooperation.

"I am on my way to Malaysia, where I will sign the great Peace Deal, which I proudly brokered between Cambodia and Thailand. Sadly, the Queen Mother of Thailand [Sirikit] has just passed away. I send my condolences to the Great People of Thailand. I will be seeing their wonderful Prime Minister [Anutin Charnvirakul] when we land. In order to accommodate everyone for this major event, we will be signing the Peace Deal immediately upon arrival," Trump wrote on Truth Social.

Trump will arrive in Malaysia on a working visit on Sunday at 10 am local time (02:00 GMT). He is expected to attend the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit as a guest of honor.

Apart from overseeing the signing of a peace accord between Thailand and Cambodia, his agenda includes holding talks with Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, and concluding a trade deal.

Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul cancelled his trip to Malaysia due to the passing of Queen Mother Sirikit. The widow of the late King Bhumibol (Rama IX) and the mother of the reigning King Maha Vajiralongkorn (Rama X) passed away in a Bangkok hospital at the age of 93 on Friday.

A Thai Foreign Ministry spokesperson told RIA Novosti that Charnvirakul was still expected to travel to Malaysia late on Saturday or early on Sunday to sign a ceasefire declaration with Cambodia.

The decades-long border dispute between Thailand and Cambodia turned into an armed conflict on July 24, with the neighbours exchanging artillery fire and airstrikes. Both sides reported casualties, including among civilians. On August 4, they announced an immediate ceasefire, which was followed by a formal agreement on its implementation days later.
