KUALA LUMPUR: Land strikes against drug cartels were on the way following maritime attacks in the eastern Pacific Ocean and Caribbean Sea, said United States President Donald Trump.
He said that the U.S. would begin targeting cartels on land, adding that the cartels effectively run Mexico.
“We are going to start now hitting land with regard to the cartels. The cartels are running Mexico,” Trump said in an interview with Fox News on Thursday.
Trump’s remarks follow the unexpected capture of Venezuelan leader Nicolás Maduro last weekend, marking the culmination of months of escalating U.S. military and economic pressure on the left-wing government.
As part of this campaign, Washington has carried out strikes on alleged drug-smuggling boats since September, killing more than 100 people.
Previously, Trump has also said that U.S. forces launched a ground attack on a docking facility in Venezuela used by these vessels.
