KUALA LUMPUR: Hamas’s response to the proposed ceasefire plan marks an important step towards halting the war in Gaza and easing the suffering of its people, says Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim .
He also welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump’s call for Israel to stop its bombardment, describing it as a necessary move to allow peace efforts to advance.
Anwar emphasised that the immediate priority is restraint: ending attacks, pausing the fighting, and ensuring swift humanitarian relief to Gaza.
While noting that durable peace cannot be achieved overnight, he said urgent steps are needed to end the anguish of civilians caught in the conflict, which he described as a tragedy that has scarred the conscience of the world.
"Peace must be built patiently, step by step. Yet there can be no delay in ending the anguish of civilians. This tragedy — which has scarred the world’s conscience — must be brought to a close," says Anwar in a recorded video.
The prime minister also underlined the role of Arab states, particularly Qatar as well as Turkiye and the wider Islamic world in sustaining the ceasefire process and advancing prospects for a political settlement.
He also said the United States must play a crucial role in pressing Israel to uphold its obligations and give diplomacy the space to work.
Anwar added that he will host Trump in Kuala Lumpur later this month during the East Asia and ASEAN–US Summits.
He said the meeting would provide an opportunity for candid and constructive discussions with Washington and regional partners on building a just and lasting peace, one that secures the rights of Palestinians and leads to the establishment of a viable, sovereign Palestinian state.
