29-year-old Jenny Santos was reportedly on her way home with her twin sister when she fell about 30 feet off an escalator onto the marble floor below.
It happened inside the World Trade Center transit hub known as the Oculus.
The victim was reportedly trying to grab a hat her twin sister had dropped when she lost her balance and fell over the side.
"It had to be horrible for her sister standing right there you know it's just dreadful it's just unbelievable something like that can happen."
Santos was taken to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.
The New Jersey resident was a teacher and coached crew a rowing academy in Bergen County.
Clemens Reinke worked alongside her.
"Just yesterday she was with us, Jenny was coaching our team... very gentle caring loving person always ready to help... she was beloved by our rowers," says Bergen County Rowing Academy coach, Clemens Reinke.
The accident raising concerns among some visitors about the need for safety rails or a glass wall.
"I think that they need to build the walls a little higher when they build these escalators because the same thing happened at Shea Stadium when they rebuilt Shea Stadium. Someone fell over the escalators. the walls are not high enough to prevent tragic accidents like what happened today."
The multi-billion-dollar transportation and shopping hub in lower Manhattan opened about a year ago.
