PRETORIA: A woman accused of ‘falsifying’ the birth of her decuplets has been admitted to hospital for psychiatric treatment.
Gosiame Thamara Sithole, 37, was first apprehended by police officers at a relative's house in the northern township of Rabie Ridge near the city of Johannesburg in the early morning of Thursday 17 June.
Sithole is believed to have been taken to Chloorkop after her partner, Teboho Tsotetsi lodged a police report about her disappearance, according to a report quoted by news.com.au.
The South African National Health Department was quoted as saying that an investigation had found that the 10 babies never existed.
A local portal, however, confirmed the birth of the 10 twins and the news had to be kept secret due to allegations of medical negligence.
Police however said Sithole had never been involved in any crime before, but had been placed under the care of the Gauteng Social Development Department.
Sithole also reportedly claimed that her partner's relatives collected donations from the community after she 'gave birth' to her 10 twin babies.
Since Sithole's detention, her lawyer Refiloe Mokoena has claimed that she is being held against her will and will apply for a court order to secure her release.
Mokoena alleged her client was initially denied legal access to visitors and that Sithole's request to visit a private psychologist instead of the institute she was taken to was turned down by the social workers from the Department of Social Development.
The Independent Media portal reports authentic Sithole content and medical negligence never occurred.
The report also cited that the whereabouts and the condition of the ten babies is not known so far.
