Stern action will be taken against traders who attempt to sabotage implementation of the Goods and Service Tax in the country, Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Minister Datuk Seri Hasan Malek said Saturday.
He said the ministry and the police were monitoring the traders concerned.
"If there is proof they violate the law, police will take action," he told reporters after a programme with consumers and presentation of prizes to the winner of the "Jom Selfie" Buy Malaysian Products campaign here Saturday.
He advised consumers with information on the sabotage attempt to lodge a report with the ministry.
Yesterday, a news portal reported that there was a movement by some quarters to sabotage the GST implementation.
Malaysian Chinese Network Association president Ng Lum Yong was reported to have said that many business outlets, including mini markets and restaurants, placed price tags stating no GST aimed at tricking consumers into believing that the tax was not imposed on the items concerned.
Suria Abdullah, 28, from Kampung Banggu, was named the winner of the "Jom Selfie" Buy Malaysian Products campaign. She received RM2,000 and a certificate.
