KOTA KINABALU: Blending world-class hospitality with deep respect for nature, culture and community, Shangri-La Rasa Ria in Kota Kinabalu has reaffirmed its commitment to sustainability through a series of impactful environmental and social initiatives.
Located 34km north of Sabah’s capital and nestled within 400 acres of lush biodiversity, the resort has embedded sustainability at the heart of its operations, a move its General Manager Fiona Hagan says is driven by the community and the land itself.
“Our journey is anchored not just in certifications like ISO 20121, but in the people of Rasa Ria and Tuaran.
“We’ve learned from them, partnered with them, and found inspiration in their knowledge and traditions," Hagan said.
From Eco-Conscious Operations to Wildlife Conservation
Behind the luxury façade, Rasa Ria’s sustainability strategy includes rainwater harvesting, electricity conservation, and food waste reduction.
In 2024, these efforts culminated in a 63.2% waste diversion rate from landfills.
A standout feature is the resort’s glass bottle recycling programme, where used glass is crushed into sand for landscaping and construction — an initiative that also invites local residents to participate, further embedding sustainability into the wider community.
The resort has also taken a conservationist approach to local wildlife, supporting pangolin protection through partnerships with environmental groups.
Efforts include biodiversity monitoring and public awareness campaigns, reflecting a holistic approach to eco-tourism.
Empowering Local Communities
Beyond the environment, Rasa Ria continues to uplift the local economy by working with Sabahan artisans, sourcing locally-grown produce, and creating inclusive employment opportunities.
Women-led initiatives such as the Sarimpak Robe collaboration with Changgih Designs help preserve traditional crafts while generating income.
In 2024, over RM240,000 was invested in ESG programmes, with a significant portion supporting the resort’s “Embrace” community engagement initiative.
More than 60 schoolchildren benefitted from educational activities and improved facilities.
Notably, the resort also celebrates inclusivity — with staff like carpenter Samri Butak, a Paralympian representing Sabah, symbolising Rasa Ria’s belief in equal opportunity employment.
Purpose-Driven Hospitality
All staff, from housekeeping to management, undergo regular training to ensure that sustainability is more than a policy — it’s a shared mindset.
By fostering internal culture change alongside external impact, the resort continues to redefine luxury tourism in Malaysia.
From its ecological innovations to meaningful community partnerships, Shangri-La Rasa Ria is shaping a future where hospitality enhances both guest experience and the wellbeing of the planet.
