This week, French luggage brand Delsey unveiled its first connected suitcase prototype called Pluggage.

Since smart devices are increasingly part and parcel of our daily lives, from smartphones to smart glasses or watches, why not invest in connected luggage? After two years spent on research and development, Delsey presented its first prototype, which packs in a dozen features.

Pluggage offers an integrated retractable speaker and charger to connect to your smartphone as well as an app to measure the weight of your suitcase, to avoid extra fees at the airport. The same dedicated app allows you to check if your piece of luggage is on board when you’re taking off and to know if anyone opened it after you dropped it off at the counter.

But before putting its Pluggage on the market, Delsey is turning to its online customers to vote for their favorite options described in a video. The company will choose the most popular features to finalize the product before it hits stores, in a year or so, according to Delsey.

Smart suitcases seem to be a 21st century trend in our globalized and connected world. An American high-tech firm has just developed a similar product, called Bluesmart, with comparable features as well as a GPS system that connects to your smartphone via a dedicated app. This project made a splash on crowdfunding site Indiegogo, collecting over $1,255,000 with a $50,000 target, and six days to go.

Meanwhile, with 26 million lost or delayed pieces of luggage each year in airports worldwide, a few tracking systems to slip into your suitcase are already on the market, such as Trakdot, Locca Mini or e-Track, a smart tag developed by Air France.
