TO some, Sabah is merely a place to hike Mount Kinabalu, a place with amazing beaches, or a place with abundant wildlife.
Besides all of that, however, the state in East Malaysia boasts tons of other tourist attractions – one which could delight martial arts fans.
According to Malaysian martial artist Audreylaura “Ice Comet” Boniface, Malaysians can look forward to a unique training camp with local martial arts pioneer AJ “Pyro” Lias Mansor at Borneo Tribal Squad, located in its capital city, Kota Kinabalu.
“Besides training indoors, we love to do outdoor training, too,” the ONE Championship athlete said with a sense of excitement.
“Our coach (AJ) loves taking us to different places. Recently, he brought us to Kundasang for elevation training, and it felt really great to train with the majestic view of Mount Kinabalu.”
Kundasang is located 90 kilometers from the gym she calls home and is the closest town to Mount Kinabalu.
If you are afraid of heights, fear not, as they also do Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu sessions by the beach.
“We’ve been to the Tanjung Aru beach and Tanjung Lipat beach on countless occasions for training,” Boniface said. “It is really fun.”
One visitor who recently had the chance to experience this unique training camp was featherweight athlete Emilio “The Honey Badger” Urrutia.
The 32-year-old spent most of his New Year training in the state alongside fellow ONE athletes Hisyam “Zephyrus” Samsudin and Ann “Athena” Osman.
“Sabah is a very beautiful place,” the 29-year-old Boniface said of the state she calls home.
“There are lots of beautiful and fun places you can visit in Sabah, which boasts a variety of attractions. I can hardly pick a favorite place, to be honest, but if you want a diving spot, beach with a view, waterfalls, or even a place to camp, then Sabah should be your next stop.”
The athlete will be itching for another vacation as soon as she is done with her next bout – an atomweight clash against Myanmar’s Bozhena Antoniyar at ONE: REIGN OF VALOR on 8 March in Yangon, Myanmar.
