As of May this year, 1,188 residents of the National Welfare Foundation's (YKN) Kuala Lumpur Anjung Singgah, who are homeless persons, have obtained jobs and returned to their families.
Chairman of YKN Board of Trustees Tan Sri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil said this was the result of counselling given to them at these shelters.
"These people are given psychological help by counselling experts here (at Anjung Singgah) to improve their preparedness to return to a better life.
"At the same time, it would revive their spirits and encourage them to be strong again," she said.
Shahrizat was speaking to reporters after presenting contributions to the homeless as part of the Sinar Kasih Ramadan programme here Monday.
The programme included handing out 500 bags of clothes, food and drinks to homeless persons within Kuala Lumpur for their break-of-fast meals, as well as providing free haircuts.
