A 15-year-old girl's interpretation of multiethnic and multicultural Malaysia has won her the grand prize for the country's second Doodle 4 Google competition, in light of the upcoming Malaysia Day.
Ch'ng Kai Wei's art piece entitled 'United, We Shine' beat three other age category group winners and will see her creation featured on Google Malaysia's home page this September 16.
"The theme is 'Celebrating Malaysia's Diversity', so I thought why not put all the (main) ethnicities together but have their eyes closed to make them seem that they are united and the same although their skin colours and their cultures may be different," the Nexus International School student said.
"I also wanted to put some iconic things that represent Malaysia culture such as the durian, Mount Kinabalu and the Petronas Twin Towers," said Ch'ng, who aspires to be a designer.
The winners in the other age groups are: Wan Muhammad Fahyim Wan Mohd Nazdi from SK Kerteh, Terengganu (age 7-9), Cheng Jun Kai of SJK (C) Kong Min, Kuantan, Pahang (age 10-12), and Muhammad Khairul Aiman Mohamad Zaidi from SMK Bandar Baru Sentul in Kuala Lumpur (age 16-17).
Managing Director for Google Malaysia, Vietnam, Philippines and New Emerging Markets, Sajith Sivanandan, said 20 doodle designs were shortlisted for each category, and what made Ch'ng's art piece outstanding was her ability to illustrate the theme of the Doodle 4 Google competition.
"All the entries were incredibly good. The doodle team that selected this based out of the views of our headquarters in the U.S. said Ch'ng's piece really captured the sense of celebrating Malaysia’s diversity as well as the Google brand, and thought it would be a great winner," Sivanandan said.
Check out Ch'ng's doodle for 24 hours on the Google Malaysia homepage this coming Malaysia Day!
