16 express bus passengers escape death in Jawi accident

Sixteen passengers on an express bus cheated death after the bus they were travelling in skidded and overturned at Kilometre 164 of the North-South Expressway north-bound near Jawi, Saturday.

In the 9.44 pm incident, six passengers were seriously injured while eight people including two bus drivers suffered light injuries.

Seberang Perai Selatan police chief Supt Shafien Mamat said the accident took place when the bus which was on its way from Genting Highlands in Pahang to Alor Star, Kedah skidded after a car overtook from the right.

"After overtaking the bus, the car suddenly veered into the path of the bus causing the bus driver to lose control and crash into the car before skidding into a drain and overturning on the left side of the road.

"The car driver escaped unhurt," he said when contacted, Sunday.

Shafien said the six seriously wounded passengers were sent to Seberang Jaya Hospital for further treatment while passengers with slight injuries were brought to Sungai Bakap Hospital.
