1GB insufficient, social media users say
Many online users say the new rate for broadband is still expensive as 1GB is too little, with many using more than 4GB to 5GB monthly.
1 gigabyte (GB) of broadband is insufficient, complained social media users a day after the Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek announced the new, lower prices for the basic broadband packages.
With the announcement, the monthly subscription for the portable packages would probably be RM25 for 1GB and at least 3G High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) for both prepaid and postpaid services.
The reduction is estimated to be 14 percent lower than the current average price.
Many online users said the new rate is still expensive as 1GB is too little and many use more than 4GB to 5GB every month.
TM offers the basic broadband package at RM38 per month for 1Mbps up to 1GB of free data usage, which is 57 percent lower than the current price of RM88 for the basic package.
Twitter users also questioned why the RM38 was not set as a fixed unlimited data price.
Ahmad Shabery had said it was hoped that the capital expenditure for infrastructure development, including fiberization, would be ongoing and in accordance with the benchmark global investment ratio of 16 percent of the capital expenditure of the telecommunication companies.
The minister had said the broadband cost in the country was among the most competitive in ASEAN except for Singapore and Brunei.
