A government MP has expressed confidence the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) issue can be a source of new strength for the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the coming general election as the government has proven to the people that allegations on the company were untrue.
Tan Sri Annuar Musa (BN-Ketereh) said the government had from the beginning, been able to counter allegations from certain parties, especially the opposition, by providing facts on 1MDB.
"I am confident, given time, the 1MDB affairs and issue despite being heavy will be answered by the government, and 1MDB will become a new strength for BN in the coming general election when we proved the allegations were untrue," he said when debating on the 2016 Supply Bill at the Dewan Rakyat Tuesday.
Annuar was also confident the attacks on 1MDB were due to quarters which did not want to see the government's strategic investment company succeed.
"Never had there been a government-linked company (GLC) under such intense public scrutiny by the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC), Attorney General's Chambers and the Public Accounts Committee (PAC).
"We know why 1MDB is being attacked... because if the government's strategic investment company succeeds, it will frustrate the opposition," he said.
In fact, he said the move by 1MDB to purchase power generation companies and focus on property development in Kuala Lumpur would threaten their status.
On political funding, Annuar said if the opposition was truly transparent, it should support the setting up of a special regulation to declare all political funds received by parties.
