Following allegations of him meeting Xavier Justo in Singapore, is Pua's post in the PAC jeopardised?
Only the parliamentary select committee can make the decision on Petaling Jaya MP Tony Pua's post in the Public Accounts Committee (PAC), according to PAC chairman Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed.
He said this was because the appointment of the PAC member was made by the committee chaired by the Speaker of Dewan Rakyat Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia.
"His (Pua) name was proposed by the party and he was chosen by the select committee. So, only the committee can suspend his membership," he told Bernama Thursday.
Nur Jazlan said this in response to a question on Pua's post in the PAC following the allegation of him meeting former PetroSaudi International Ltd (PetroSaudi) executive Xavier Andre Justo in Singapore.
Yesterday, Barisan Nasional Backbenchers Club (BNBBC) also urged Pua to exempt himself from involvement in the PAC's investigations into 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).
BNBBC chairman Tan Sri Shahrir Abdul Samad was reported as saying it was to ensure that PAC's credibility would not be questioned by the people following the allegation.
There have been claims of attempts to topple the government by destabilising the country and undermining national security.
It was also reported that opposition leaders had met Justo to buy information from him to discredit the Malaysian government.
Nur Jazlan also explained that Pua's post in the PAC would not affect its investigations into the 1MDB.
"Since we (PAC members) are chosen from (the various available) parties, we will just do our job to give our views and we are neutral," he said.
PAC's investigations into 1MDB began on May 19.
