Penang UMNO appears in no hurry to take action against Batu Kawan UMNO division deputy chief, Datuk Paduka Khairuddin Abu Hassan after he lodged a police report against the debt-ridden company, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB).

“We will not rush this as UMNO is a democratic party. We will assess if there was any breach of discipline,” said Penang UMNO Liaison Committee deputy chairman Datuk Seri Reezal Merican Naina Merican when contacted by Astro AWANI.

Reezal explained that as a member of Umno, Khairuddin is subjected to the party's code of ethics.

“If there was a breach of discipline, not only him (Khairuddin) but action will be taken against everyone,” he said.

When asked about the police report made by Khairuddin, Reezal said it was his own prerogative to do so.

“We do need to make a big issue out of this as it was his right to lodge a police report. Furthermore, the police report was made against 1MDB. So, 1MDB must come clean to explain,” he said.

Meanwhile, Penang UMNO Secretary Datuk Musa Sheikh Fadzir, when contacted by Astro AWANI, said he is clueless as to when state UMNO meeting will be held to discuss the fiasco.

“I’m still not sure. The chairman (Datuk Zainal Abidin Osman) will have to decide on a date,” he said.

At a press conference held Saturday, Musa stated Penang UMNO has nothing to do with Khairuddin's decision to lodge the police report.

"We do not support his action and regard it as a personal act, and that has nothing to do with the State UMNO. Until today, he has not contacted us about matter," he said in Bukit Mertajam, Saturday.

Khairuddin lodged the report at the Dang Wangi police headquarters on Friday alleging there was mismanagement of funds by the government-owned agency and called for a thorough investigation.
