International auditing firm Deloitte is auditing 1Malaysia Development Bhd's (1MDB) financial accounts in stages, beginning with Edra Global Energy Bhd (Edra), an energy asset company owned by 1MDB, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.
Second Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Husni Hanadzlah said this is because 1MDB has consolidated accounts, comprising various companies under it and it is currently being investigated by the Auditor-General.
"At present, Deloitte is auditing Edra, which has 13 companies, after that real estate companies, then holding companies.
"The holding company is currently being audited by the Auditor-General, So, it will be done later. They (Deloitte) will do that, they are doing it in stages," he said when winding up debate on the 11th Malaysia Plan on behalf of the Ministry of Finance.
He was responding to a question from Liew Chin Tong (DAP-Kluang) who asked whether Deloitte had been appointed to audit 1MDB's financial statements for the year ended March 31, 2015, which allegedly had yet to be carried out.
Ahmad Husni said the Auditor-General's investigation into 1MDB proved that the government is serious in getting to the truth in the matter.
"To get the truth, there are those who must carry out the investigation and the best is the Auditor-General who knows the financial transactions, including cash books, ledgers, as well as complex documents related to them.
"In the context of documents from abroad that cannot be obtained by the Auditor-General, Bank Negara will get them as the process involves international protocols that can only be accessed by the central bank," he said.
