The police have detained a schoolboy and schoolgirl after a 'stunt' driving came to a crashing halt with the boy ramming his father's Perodua Alza into a police patrol multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) yesterday.

Bintulu police chief Supt Zailanni Amit said the form five students were caught speeding in the vehicle while a patrol team was conducting checks at the new Jalan Bintulu-Tatau market at 11.40am.

In a statement here today, he said the police brought the vehicle to a halt after it crashed into the police MPV in Jalan Sungai Nyigu, he said in a statement here today.

The students are from Bintulu.

Zailanni said the incident was the second such case in three weeks to involve an underage driving recklessly without a licence.

In both cases, the suspects crashed into a police patrol MPV, he added.

"In the first case involving two Form Three students, one of them was driving his father's Perodua Myvi," he said.

Zailanni said the driver suddenly sped off when the police asked for his identity card in the 12.50am incident at Pantai Tanjung Batu on May 21.

He said both cases were investigated under Section 279 of the Penal Code for reckless driving which carried a maximum jail term of six months or fine of up to RM2,000 or both.

He urged parents to monitor their children's activities as driving without a licence was a serious offence and parents would be served with a RM300 compound for allowing their children to drive without a driving licence.
