48 snakes, mostly cobras, caught in Bagan Datuk between January and May
Most of the snakes were in bushes at housing compounds; most were cobras.
The Civil Defence Department (APM) caught 48 snakes here between January and May this year in response to reports made by residents.
District APM officer, Lt Mohd Zaidi Ahmad said the number was 43 in the same period last year.
"April recorded the highest number of cases with 15; there were 10 cases including three pythons with a length of between three and five metres, on three consecutive days, May 20, 21 and 22.
"Most of the snakes were in bushes at housing compounds; most were cobras. We believe, there were more cases in April due to the rainy weather factor.
"Snakes will look for shelter when their habitat is flooded," he told reporters when met here today.
Meanwhile, he attributed the increase in recent years of reports for assistance to get rid of snakes, to public awareness about the tasks of the department.
Mohd Zaidi also advised residents to close any gaps in their homes that could allow snakes to enter.
