KUALA LUMPUR: Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said there has been a 60 per cent spike in the number of online cheating cases in the last 10 years.
He said fraud syndicates were becoming more creative and taking advantage of advanced technological developments, including social media, resulting in huge losses involving hundreds of thousands of ringgit.
"Many victims have remained silent because they feel the number of losses suffered is small," he told a press conference after the launching of the 2021 Commercial Crime Prevention Campaign (Online Crime) here today.
Meanwhile, Bukit Aman Commercial Crime Investigation Department director Datuk Mohd Kamarudin Md Din said 17,537 online cheating cases with losses amounting to RM449.5 million were recorded in the first ten months of this year.
He said the number showed an increase from 17,111 cases involving losses of RM510 million last year.
