Paris is the heart of the fashion world, and it has definitely lived up to expectations to impress and amaze as we end Paris Fashion Week for Fall/Winter 16-17. Fashion world heavyweights Chanel and Givenchy regularly show here in majestic locations like the Grand Palais. And it’s always culturally diverse with top designers from all over the world – all in all, the affair is a style hub for A-List fashionistas. Here’s a look back at the most influential designers’ shows and unforgettable collections.
1) Vivienne Westwood
The runway was filled with all sorts of crazy, more than usual at a Vivienne Westwood show. The designer even jumped on the stage midway to help a model who suffered from a pretty major wardrobe malfunction while wearing an asymmetrical wrap dress. Phew! Crisis prevented.
2) Christian Dior
Demna Gvasalia’s debut collection for Balenciaga saw the artistic director make his mark on the French brand. Sporty jackets in bright colourful hues, large and opened at the shoulders for a more sophisticated silhouette. The collection had an everydayness that felt contemporary.
4) Givenchy
Riccardo Tisci offered a feast for our eyes with patterns and textures that would suit all tastes. Mod silhouettes, knee-high boots which were decked with imagery ranging from tie-dyed mandelas to the Egyptian Eye of Horus. The designer was influenced by ancient Egypt and there was a touch of military detailing along with snake, and leopard print too.
5) Yves Saint Laurent
It was 80s disco on steroids on the catwalk. Everything from exaggerated shoulders, sheer tights to even oversized waist belts that seemed a little like the wardrobe from the film,
Heathers. Designer Hedi Slimane did not hold back on the over- the-top glamour and makeup. There were lots of shoulders!
6) Louis Vuitton
Taking a sporty turn, Nicolas Ghesquière tapped into some heritage designs for his Fall 2016 show, with scarf dresses that echoed swelling sails, stretch knits and bold striped accents. Heavy black boots were everywhere and bags included leopard-print packs, oversized weekenders and oil slick bags.
7) Chanel
The Chanel show is always a highlight of Paris Fashion Week. Karl Lagerfeld’s Fall/Winter 2016 collection went back in time to old school couture, with loads of class. Gloves, oversized pearls and amusing bonnets presented heavily. Lagerfeld’s favourites Kendall Jenner and Gigi Hadid walked the runway as well, helping him bring to life the over-the-top extravaganza.
8) Miu Miu
Miuccia Prada knows how to cast a show by sending down models from Estella Boersma and Emily Ratajkowski in her new denim and jacquard creations, each with slicked-back hair and radiant makeup. Fashion-week staples Kendall Jenner, Gigi Hadid, and Bella Hadid all strutted down the runway and each look was better than the next.
