88 Kopitiam suspended over alleged links to Kok's video

Malaysia's national broadcaster Radio Television Malaysia (RTM) has suspended the broadcast of TV2’s Chinese sitcom “88 Kopitiam” following allegations that one of its actors was involved in Seputeh MP Teresa Kok's controversial Chinese New Year video.

In a statement released on Saturday, RTM’s broadcasting director-general Datuk Norhyati Ismail said it will summon the programme’s producers soon to answer the allegations.

“This is to ensure that no parties are being victimised or misused by certain irresponsible individuals,” the statement said, adding that it will conduct reviews and investigate on any programme that is linked to activities that could tarnish the country’s image.

"RTM will not hesitate to take stern action against anyone involved in such activities," she said.

An actor in "88 Kopitiam" was alleged to have acted in Kok's video entitled Onederful Malaysia CNY 2014 Video Clip that drew flak from various sections of society and political parties.

88 Kopitiam, which airs every Monday at 7pm, is a comedy-style programme that touches on current issues affecting the Chinese community.
