Communication and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Shabery Cheek on Saturday showed off his skill in utilising various social media apps, while speaking in a 'lecture-like' programme in front of 240 university students.
Not only did he present his nearly four-hour interactive lecture live through the 'telegram' app Ahmad Shabery, who is also Umno Supreme Council member and Umno Overseas Club Chairman, had also posted a status on his Facebook account and tweeted about it live on the big screens.
His posting "Ada ahli parlimen tak tau bila hari Merdeka dan bila hari Malaysia" ('There are Members of Parliament who do not know when is Independence day and when is Malaysia day). "Patutkah syarat jadi calon kena lulus ujian kenegaraan? #Pemanas" (Should passing a test in statehood be made a criteria to become a candidate"#Pemanas') - received more than 6,000 'likes' on Facebook and more than 700 retweets in just half an hour.
To bring home his point, Ahmad Shabery said these social media apps which were made available through today's 'hyperconnectivity', could reach anyone around the world and the people en masse in an instant, hence, they should be better utilised.
"A leader must develop critical skill to build communication, convey information and shape people's perception in this digital age," he said in the programme during 2014 National Students Leadership Conference (Pemanas) 2014 at the Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC), here.
During the programme, he had also single-handedly hosted several social media related activities for the local and overseas Malaysian university students.
Meanwhile, Ahmad Shabery when met by the reporters noted that in dealing with various messages through such a wide spectrum, wisdom was much needed.
"Like now, chit-chatting in the coffee shops, it does not end there only, but continues in a big way until the whole world (through social media).
"Because of that, we need to exert discretion in our evaluation, this matter needs to be understood," he said.
