The Federal government and the Terengganu state government are urged to provide special allocation for the construction of structured irrigation and drainage system in Bandar Baru Ajil to prevent a recurrence of flash floods.
Ajil assemblyman Ghazali Taib said his office was currently drafting a plan on irrigation and drainage systems to ensure development carried out would not have adverse effects on the surrounding areas, especially flash floods.
"I understand the floods in Ajil town on Saturday was caused by too much rainwater... that's why I always emphasised that the drainage system must be structured properly to avoid such incidents.
"If such incidents recur, the effect cause greater damage and losses in the future because this area will see more development," he told reporters after visiting some of the areas affected by floods here Monday.
Ghazali who is also the State Communications, Multimedia and Special Duties committee chairman said the effect of irrigation and drainage systems that was not structured properly has resulted in some areas that were never flooded before, coming under water this year.
"Among the areas inundated by flash floods are PPRT Bukit Ara, Ajil Perdana residential area and Sekolah Kebangsaan Ajil.
"It happened when the existing drains couldn't cope with the amount of rainwater especially water that flowed from the East Coast Expressway Phase II (LPT2)," he said. -- BERNAMA
