The perception that criminals deserve to be shot should be erased from people’s minds.

This is the opinion of criminologist Datuk Akhbar Satar who said so following increased public perception that it is alright to shoot criminals, in light of the increased shooting incidents that targets criminals.

Akhbar said no one should be allowed to take the law into their own hands and the public should not have such a perception.

“We live in a civilised society. We have the rule of law which we have to abide by. You can’t simply go and shoot a person who shot your friend.

That is wrong. We have the law to punish the person who shot your friend,” he told Astro Awani.

Akhbar said the media has to play an important role to shape the reader’s perception.

“The public perception that criminals ought to be shot is partly the media’s fault. The media should not confuse the publice by shaping their perception in a negative manner,” he said.

In recent times, shooting incidents have become a norm in the country with an average of one person being shot per day.

Since April 12, there have been 30 incidents of shootings, with 24 victims killed.

In the past two days alone, there were four incidents of shootings in the country.

Last Wednesday, a 29-year-old man was shot by two assailants on a motorcyle while he was driving at a housing area in Chemor, Ipoh.

The victim received four gun shot wounds at close range and he is now in Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital's intensive care unit.

Two hours later, more than 20 shots were fired at a bungalow in the affluent neighbourhood of Jesselton Heights, George Town.
