More than 1,000 people from 47 NGOs today gathered in front of the Embassy of the United States here to protest against the latest Israeli violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem.

Participants of the 'Day of Anger Gathering', held after Friday prayers, handed over a memorandum to the embassy.

Malaysian Muslim Youth Movement (ABIM) president Mohamad Raimi Ab Rahim said the memorandum urged the government of the United States, a strong ally of Israel, to take action in connection with the latest developments at the Al-Aqsa Mosque.

"We believe US President Barack Obama has extensive influence to stop the Israeli aggression against the people of Palestine and the violations by the Israeli police and people at the Al-Aqsa Mosque," he told reporters after handing over the memorandum.

Malaysian Consultative Council for Islamic Organisations (Mapin) president Azmi Abdul Hamid, who was with Mohamad Raimi, said they handed the memorandum to the embassy regional security officer, Bernard J Green, for delivery to the ambassador, Joseph Y. Yun.

"We were informed that the embassy would send the memorandum to the United States and provide us with the feedback," he said.

The gathering began at about 2pm after the Friday prayers.

Wangsa Maju Police chief Supt Mohamad Roy Suhaimi Sarif said the gathering was free of any commotion.

"The police had the situation under control and the participants did not enter prohibited areas," he said.

He also said the gathering forced the closure of a section of Jalan Ampang and Jalan Tun Razak and led to heavy traffic congestion on the two roads up to 3.20pm when the protesters dispersed.
