An ambulance driver was killed while eight others were hurt in a crash involving an ambulance and a multipurpose vehicle (MPV) at Km404 southbound, between Tanjung Malim and Lembah Beringin on Saturday.

The deceased was identfiied as Safar Ibrahim,57, the driver of the ambulance from Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

Hulu Selangor acting deputy police chief, DSP Zulkifli Bedin said the accident at 4pm involved nine people, including three girls on board the MPV.

"Four people inside the ambulance were the driver, the second driver and two nurses.

"The accident in heavy rain occurred when the two vehicles travelling in the middle lane of the road and heading in the same direction collided causing them to overturn," he said when contacted by Bernama here.

The ambulance driver died at the scene while nurse Rabaitul Adawayah Samsudin,24, suffered serious lung injury while second ambulance driver Mohd Rudin Ahmad, 50, and nurse Normanan Farida Makhtar,28, were slightly hurt.

Five people in the MPV who suffered minor injuries were driver Kok Chin Wei, 37, and passengers Lum Yoke Moi, 37, Chauyuet Jing,14, Chauyaet Thong, 11, and Chauyet Wen,8.

The ambulance was on its way from Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital, Ipoh to Kuala Lumpur Hospital.

The deceased was taken to Kuala Lumpur Hospital while all those hurt were treated at Sungai Buloh Hospital.

The case is investigated under Section 41(1) of Road Transport Act 1987.
