Another flood relief centre was opened in Alor Gajah, raising the number of evacuees to 99 staying at two centres as at 6pm today, from 19 at noon.
Alor Gajah Disaster Management Committee Secretariat spokesman, Captain Mohammad Fairul Asikin Kadir said the new relief centre at Kampung Panchor Mosque, Durian Tunggal was opened at 4.30pm.
"The centre shelters 80 flood victims comprising eight teachers and 72 students from Madrasah Tahfiz al-Quran Ainur Syukriah, Kampung Panchor, while the one at the Kampung Tanjung Rimau Luar community hall in Gadek, houses 19 victims from four families," he said when contacted by Bernama today.
He said heavy rain since yesterday was believed to be the cause of floods in the area.
Reportedly, several areas in Melaka are experiencing light rain with rising river water readings in the affected areas.
Several agencies were involved in the evacuation of the flood victims including the police, Malaysian Flood Management Committee, Social Welfare Department, Malaysian Civil Defence Force and the Health Ministry. - BERNAMA
