A transit camp, believed to have been abandoned by human trafficking syndicates at the Mata Ayer forest reserve in Lubuk Sireh, is located just 100 metres from the Thailand border.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department, Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim said he was shocked as the camp was well-built, neat and equipped with facilities such as a prayer area and small dam.

"It appears that a community had lived there, going by the discovery of equipment such as generators, shroud, prayer mats, prayer outfits as well as the existence of a vegetable farm.

"Whether there was torture (torture sessions) or not, we will wait for the outcome of the police investigations," he told reporters after a visit to the camp here Sunday.

Shahidan said the transit camp appeared like a Viet Cong (Vietnamese communist) camp and it took two hours of walking to the camp at Bukit Wang Burma in Wang Kelian.

"The size of the area is half the length of a football field and I believe it was not built by Malaysians based on the design and its environment," he noted.

Shahidan said the camp was now guarded by the General Operations Force.
