Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s family today sought a royal pardon for his sodomy conviction.
This matter was confirmed to Astro AWANI by PKR communications director Fahmi Fadzil.
Fahmi said Anwar’s wife, Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Ismail and his daughter Nurul Nuha went to the Istana Negara to submit the application, while Nurul Izzah has submitted an official letter to the Parliament to inform of the matter.
“This is because the Dewan speaker Tan Sri Pandikar Amin Mulia has to be notified about the application so that he is not required to announce the Permatang Pauh seat as vacant.
“However, PKR does not know anything about this. The decision to seek a royal pardon was made by his family,” he said.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that Istana Negara confirms receiving Anwar's family petition seeking a royal pardon on his conviction for the case.
Before this, media reports had stated that Anwar will not seek for royal pardon, with PKR secretary-general Rafizi Ramli saying that Anwar had not provided any instructions to proceed with the royal pardon.
