Anwar's medical treatment in accordance to prison procedures - Prisons Department

The Prisons Department has never prohibited a prisoner from seeking treatments in the hospital following recommendation by a medical officer who examined the concerned prisoner.

A statement was issued by the Prisons Department, signed by Prisons Department deputy director (Prisons Policy) Supri Hashim to clarify the current situation of former Opposition Leader, Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

"Based on the prison’s procedures, all prisoners will be examined by a medical officer placed throughout all prisons during entry followed by subsequent check-up conducted from time to time, when necessary.

"For prisoners who require further treatment in a hospital outside the premises of the prison -- including the treatment of experts -- will be immediately referred by the medical officer," the statement said.

According to the statement, Anwar’s medical treatment since he started serving time at Sungai Buloh Prison is in accordance to the above procedure.

"Since serving prison time from February 10 until May 29, 2015, he had his health checked by a panel of medical experts from Hospital Kuala Lumpur (HKL), while the daily checks are performed by the medical officer at the Sungai Buloh prison," he said.

The statement added that during his medical check, Anwar is found to be stable and he was observing the ‘puasa sunat’ on Mondays and Thursdays each week.

Two days ago, several reports have been published about the state of his health, which deteriorated after his request for treatment was ignored.

The report mentioned about Anwar’s weight loss, blood in the stool sample, serious shoulder injury and erratic blood pressure.

PKR parliamentary whip Datuk Johari Abdul had earlier reported that will be sent to HKL tomorrow, where he will undergo a full check-up, observation and treatment.
