Opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim today said that the decision on whether to make newly elected Kajang assemblyman Datin Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail as the Selangor Menteri Besar will be made at the state level.
Anwar said so in response to a question on whether Dr Wan Azizah will be replacing current Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim.
“It has to be discussed in Selangor,” he said briefly at the Parliament lobby today.
Asked if there is a strong possibility that Dr Wan Azizah would be the next MB, Anwar reiterated that the discussion has to be held at the state level.
Anwar added that the Kajang by election was a prove of the Chinese voters' support for Pakatan Rakyat. He said this, despite the drop in majority in the recently concluded by-election.
“We had better popular support. We had an increase of popular support to 59.7 per cent from 57 per cent (in the 13th General Election).
“Anything exceeding 72 per cent is a comfortable win. That is commendable,” he said.
Anwar added that the coalition managed to get more Malay support this time and still hold the majority among the Indians, Chinese and the Malays whereas MCA still relied on Umno for support.
“If MCA wants to compare their 7 per cent increase in Chinese votes as a positive sign, then they have to wait for the next century (to make a comeback),” Anwar said.
On Sunday, Dr Wan Azizah won the Kajang state seat with a majority of 5,379 votes against Barisan Nasional's Datin Paduka Chew Mei Fun.
The by-election was held following the resignation it’s former state assemblyman, PKR's Lee Chin Cheh.
Anwar who was to initially contest the sear, was replaced by Wan Azizah after being convicted and sentenced to five years of jail for sodomy by the Appeals Court, last March 7.
