Delivering Malaysia’s national statement at the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting - Session 1, themed “Towards a More Connected, Resilient Region and Beyond”, Anwar said broader engagement with the Global South would enhance the inclusivity and impact of APEC’s agenda.

“Greater participation from Latin American and African economies, either through formal or informal engagements, will translate the APEC agenda into something more substantially transformative, inclusive and truly impactful,” he said.

Anwar said the future of global cooperation lies in fostering collaboration across regions and sectors, adding that Malaysia supports efforts to make APEC more representative of diverse economic realities.

The Prime Minister also introduced the concept of collaborative governance, which he described as a model based on shared purpose rather than shared power.

“Collaborative governance is not about sharing power. It is about sharing purpose,” he said.

He emphasised the importance of a whole-of-society approach, involving governments, industries, academia and communities, to address complex global challenges and drive meaningful change.

Anwar’s remarks align with Malaysia’s MADANI Economy Framework, which aims to build a resilient, inclusive and sustainable economy.

He noted that APEC’s focus on green growth, digital transformation, resilient supply chains and food security resonates with Malaysia’s national development priorities.

The Prime Minister also welcomed the anticipated meeting between United States President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, describing it as a positive step towards strengthening regional dialogue and cooperation.

He further cited the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accord between Thailand and Cambodia as a reminder that peace must be nurtured through trust and diplomacy, drawing parallels with ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine.

Anwar concluded by reaffirming Malaysia’s commitment to regional cooperation and inclusive development, stating that the future will belong to regions that can foster collaboration across all levels of society.
