Astro ranks top 1% of media companies globally in the FTSE4Good Index Series

KUALA LUMPUR: ASTRO is proud to announce that its ESG score in the latest December 2024 FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index assessment by global index provider FTSE Russell has improved by 20% to 4.1 (out of 5). This results places Astro in the top 1% of media companies globally (100 percentile rank). This marked improvement (from top 28% last year) is a testament to the strong progress we have made within our environment initiatives.
Created by the global index and data provider FTSE Russell, the FTSE4Good Index Series is designed to measure the performance of companies demonstrating strong Environmental, Social and Governance (ESG) practices. The FTSE4Good indexes are used by a wide variety of market participants to create and assess responsible investment funds and other products.
FTSE Russell evaluations are based on performance in areas such as Corporate Governance, Health & Safety, Anti-Corruption and Climate Change. Businesses included in the FTSE4Good Index Series meet a variety of environmental, social and governance criteria.
As a founding constituent of the FTSE4Good Bursa Malaysia Index, Astro continues to champion sustainable and responsible business practices, aligning itself with the highest global standards.
Astro's key ESG initiatives include:
• Commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2040, having developed its detailed Climate Roadmap to
guide this journey.
• Year on year reduction in overall greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption. The company has
installed solar panels that harvested over 1.5 million kWh of photovoltaic energy in FY24, equivalent to
avoiding 1,200 tCO2e of carbon emissions or planting 30,000 trees.
• Community driven programmes to promote access to education through sports to Malaysian students i.e.
Astro Kem Badminton, Klinik Sepak Takraw League (STL) and Klink Netball Super League (NSL).
• Contribution towards community impact programmes across various charities including recent flood relief
and support for underprivileged communities.
• A robust governance framework, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations.
Astro recognise its unique responsibility as the nation’s leading media and content platform to deliver impactful messaging to influence and drive positivity in the community. Through its Voice For Good initiative, 7,770 hours of public service announcements (PSA) and more than 2,000 hours of ESG-related content was broadcast over its platforms in FY24 and it intends to invest more in this coming year.
Astro utilizes its power of storytelling and reach to support partner organizations like the United Nations Global Compact Network Malaysia – Brunei (UNGCMYB), WWF-Malaysia, Global Environment Centre and other, in its ESG aspirations and give sustainability the attention it rightly deserves amongst Malaysians.
