Audi LMS cup returns to Sepang

The big news is that Alex Yoong from Teda Racing Team is now in the lead and set the record as the first driver to have won two races the entire season. Thanks to that second victory in Round 8 and the fourth place finish in Round 9, Yoong had been propelled to the top of the leader board from third when he first arrived at Sepang.

It wasn’t an easy weekend for Yoong, in Round 8 the Malaysian driver started from third on the grid before muscling his way pass pole-sitter Cheng Congfu of FAW-VW Audi Racing Team on the opening lap to take the lead. Marchy Lee in second place had proceeded to pile the pressure on Yoong at the closing stages of the race but Yoong had wisely saved his Push to Pass uses when he needed them the most to jump on the top step of the podium. But although he had started on Pole in Round 9, he quickly lost the lead a number of drivers. Yoong ultimately finished fourth by the end of the race.

India’s Aditya Patel of Team Audi R8 LMS Cup came to Sepang as the leader of the championship board, but after a collision with Audi Hong Kong team’s Marchy Lee saw his Round 8 ended prematurely. Patel fought back in Round 9, having not able to set a time in Round 8, the Indian driver started from the back of the grid to finish fifth.

Marchy Lee had worked the hardest during the Malaysian LMS weekend. Not only was he one of the drivers who had found his way pass Cheng in Round 8, the Hong Kong driver also had to make a number of overtaking moves to overtake Swiss driver Rahel Frey of Castrol Racing Team for pole. While his Round 8 push for the podium’s top spot had been futile, Lee made up for it in Round 9.

The defending champion had to work his way up the field in Round 9 by first driving pass Round 8 winner Alex Yoong before challenging Rahel Frey for first. To his dismay, Cheng caught up with him in the closing stages of the race and both drivers were enjoying lots of wheel to wheel racing with Lee still taking the chequered flag first by 0.353 of a second ahead of Cheng.

Rahel Frey of Castrol Racing Team enjoyed the weekend with two third place finishes, the Swiss driver had shown much pace and consistency in both races. Frey had even pulled the best overtaking move on Yoong in Round 9 to take the lead but unfortunately lost it to Lee after leading two laps of the race. Her third place finishes had secured her sixth place in the standings.

After Round 8 and 9 of the Audi LMS Cup, homeboy Alex Yoong leads the championship with four points from Cheng Congfu. Denmark’s Thomas Fjordback of Federal-Mogul Motorsport Racing and Aditya Patel tied for third, seven points adrift from the leaders.
