Former Election Commission (EC) chairman Datuk Azhar Azizan Harun has been elected as the 10th Dewan Rakyat Speaker.
It was after the Prime Minister, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin proposed his name as a candidate from the government.
However, the appointment process caused dissatisfaction among the opposition MPs when no voting process was done.
However, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Legal), Datuk Takiyuddin Hassan, interjected by saying there was no need for voting because only one name was proposed.
Article 4 (3) of the Rules of Meeting of the Dewan Rakyat stipulates that if only one member or only one other individual is proposed and supported to become the Speaker, then the Secretary shall declare that the member or the only other individual has been elected, without being submitted for a decision by the meeting.
On the other hand, if more than one member or another person was proposed and is supported as the speaker, then the Dewan Rakyat shall exercise a vote.
