Batu Kawan rally held without permit - Police

The Pakatan Rakyat rally at the Batu Kawan Stadium last night was held without a permit, said Penang police chief Datuk Abdul Rahim Hanafi.

He said the police did not issue any permit to the organiser as the application was made less than 10 days before the rally was to be held.

"The organiser submitted a notification letter for the rally to the Seberang Perai Selatan OCPD at 4.15pm on May 10 (Friday).

"The OCPD responded the same day by asking the organiser to postpone the rally as it did not comply with the conditions imposed under Section 9 (1) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 which requires an organiser to apply for a permit 10 days before holding an assembly," Abdul Rahim said in statement today.

Hence, the police had lodged a report against the organiser under Section 9 (5) of the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012 for holding a rally without a permit which carries a fine not exceeding RM10,000, if convicted.

Abdul Rahim said the police also received reports about the tyres of seven cars being punctured, including that of the Seberang Perai Selatan OCPD.

The rally in protest of the Sunday's May 5 poll results was attended by PKR adviser Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, DAP secretary-general Lim Guan Eng and PAS deputy president Mohamad Sabu.
