KUALA LUMPUR:The government should showcase its leadership by extending the loan moratorium for another three months, said Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

In a statement the Chairman of Pakatan Harapan said the move was needed to ensure the sustainability of the economic sector, especially in the Klang Valley after the government decided to implement the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO).

Anwar claimed that the people were still not clear about the government's strategy in dealing with this crisis and how the economy should be redeveloped.

"What is presented to the people is a conflicting instruction or guide, including practice in the execution of punishment.

"The recent work-from-home directive turned out to be absurd when it only instructed staff to work from home, while those in the operating division consisting of those on low incomes were required to work as usual," he added.

On October 20, the government announced that public and private sector employees at the management and supervisory level in the areas under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) were instructed to work from home and not have to go to the office.

Senior Defence Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob said the directive came into effect on October 22 (today) and would only end when the implementation of CMCO in the Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya, Labuan, Selangor and Sabah, ends.

Anwar said he was confused how the move could help the public health aspect by only sacrificing blue collar workers.

The Port Dickson Member of Parliament added that changes at the last minute, including instructions involving public sector workers and sectors under the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI) were seen to add to the complexity of the public and a waste of time.

"We need a transparent and informative government, especially involving clear policies in the face of crisis. It does not build confidence, to either domestic or foreign investors when important statements are made without a thorough study.

"Even though the government has announced that economic activity is allowed, the latest guidelines will have an impact on businesses, especially those who are currently struggling in the retail sector.

"According to Retail Group Malaysia (RGM), about 51,000, which is 15 per cent of the total industry in Malaysia will not be able to survive for more than four or five months," he said.

Therefore, Anwar said with the extension of the moratorium, it could at least give a sigh of relief to the people, especially those who were directly affected by the implementation of the CMCO.
