Be wary of umrah package scams

Muslims have been urged to be careful with Umrah packages on offer, as there have been many scams of late.

Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz said a widespread of fraud cases involving fake agents has been reported and the trend was worrisome.

"These false agents offer cheap umrah packages and promise comfortable accommodation to the victims, but after receiving the money, they just disappear or fail to fulfill their obligations as promised.

"In fact, there have been cases where victims face problems pertaining to Umrah visas, having no tickets or violations of the terms of Umrah packages," he told reporters after closing a campaign on the awareness of fraudulent Umrah packages and consumer rights in Taman Bukit Kerajaan here, Tuesday.

The campaign was aimed at providing basic information to people regarding the packages and for them to make the right choice.

Mohamed Nazri added that the cheapest Umrah packages were valued at RM4,900 for a 12 days/10 nights trip to the holy land of Makkah and Madinah.
