Bersih 4: Organisers ban the use of vuvuzelas on second day

Organisers of the Bersih 4 rally have banned the use of vuvuzelas in a bid to reduce the noise pollution in the areas surrounding Dataran Merdeka, Jalan Tun Perak and Jalan Tunku Abdul Rahman.

Coalition for Clean and Fair Elections (Bersih 2.0) chairperson, Maria Chin Abdullah said, the deafening wail of the vuvuzela, especially during a political leader’s speech, made it difficult for organisers to control the situation.

“It’s too loud, even I was unable to sleep last night. There were still those who used the vuvuzela this morning. This will make it difficult for the organisers to control the situation,” she said when contacted by Astro AWANI on Sunday morning.

She said, the situation is still under control. Participants also took part in spiritual activities at 10am.

When asked what kind of action would be taken on participants who insist on using the vuvuzelas, she said, organisers would only advise them to stop.

Bersih 2.0 had advised Bersih 4 participants to refrain from using vuvuzelas during the rally in a posting on its Facebook page late last night.

“Please do not use the vuvuzelas tomorrow (Sunday). It will only make it difficult to ensure the safety of participants and cause uneasiness among the public.”

The Bersih 4 rally has entered its second day on Sunday with no untoward incidents reported so far.

A majority of participants had camped around the Dataran Merdeka area after taking part in the rally since 10am on Saturday.

Apart from Kuala Lumpur, the Bersih 4 rally is also taking place in Kuching and Kota Kinabalu.

Although police have deemed the Bersih 4 rally as illegal, no arrests have been made so far. The demonstration has also been reported to be peaceful so far.
