Big challenges lie ahead for the SIC in 2016, here’s what they plan to do about it

2015 was a challenging year for the SIC. The sharp drop F1 spectator numbers, lower than expected fan support for the WSBK due to the Hari Raya period, FOREX losses, GST pressures on the public and finally the weakening ringgit have summed up a year of many ups and downs for the Sepang International Circuit.

The haze very nearly ended the MotoGP races, but the fans came anyway – and broke attendance records to witness the two-wheeled spectacle. Other highs for the SIC included bagging the Recognising Award Winning Results (rAWr) award for the Best Event Management Company in 2015.

The mandatory track re-surfacing works beginning 15th February through to 8th May has required a thorough shake-up of the yearly calendar, which could be pivotal in driving the crowds back to the world’s hottest race venue. The track re-surfacing, understood to cost some RM30-million ringgit also includes a major revamp of the trackside drainage systems and safety features such as gravel run-off areas and barricades.

Interestingly, the new surface is also said to be smoother, thereby promoting a quicker flow of racing and more overtaking opportunities – alas, the number of corners will remain the same.

The venue shut-down however means we have a very new calendar for 2016, so as the cliché goes, mark your calendars down!

WorldSBK Series: 13th May to 15th May 2016 (Round 6)

Formula One: 30th September to 2nd October 2016 (Round 16/21)

Moto GP: 28th October to 30th October 2016 (Round 17/18)

Sepang 12Hrs: 10th December – 11th December2016 (Final Round IGTC)

The Sepang 12Hours will be a focal point in 2016 as SIC plans to make the event bigger than ever. More support from home grown teams, while coinciding with final round of the 2016 Intercontinental GT Challenge is poised to draw many international teams, particularly from Japan.

Ticket also receives a boost in value with Super Early Bird offers for F1 and WSBK. The Star Stand tickets are a unique addition too, allowing punters to enjoy the race proceeding and the post-race concert from a premium vantage point on the same spot.
