Police believed they have solved the murder of PKR Miri branch secretary Bill Kayong, with the arrest of key suspects and seizure of the murder weapon.
Sarawak police commissioner, Datuk Mazlan Mansor said the murder weapon, a shotgun, was seized along with an empty bullet shell from a suspect’s house just today.
“At 5pm today, one of the suspects that we had previously arrested led us to his house in Hai Nam Lama in Miri. There, he showed the police where he had stashed the shotgun, believed to be used in the murder, along with several bullets and an empty shell.
“With the arrests of several key suspects and the seizure of the murder weapon, we believe Bill Kayong’s murder case has been solved,” Mazlan said in a media statement.
He further explained that the police had their work cut out for them from the beginning in this case. To start off, Bill was shot dead by an unidentified assailant while he was in his car waiting at a traffic light at E-Mart, Tudan in Miri – an area where there was no CCTV to record the incident.
The incident took place early morning, around 8.15am on June 21, but no witnesses have since come forward to assist police investigations, Mazlan said.
The post-mortem on Bill’s remains and forensic investigation on his vehicle, a white Toyoto Hilux, only revealed that the suspect had used a shotgun to kill the 43-year-old politician, he added.
Following the setting up of a special task force, led by Sarawak CID chief, SAC Dev Kumar, to probe the murder, six arrests have since been made between June 30 and July 1. The suspects comprised five men and one woman, aged between 22 and 41 years.
Meanwhile, Mazlan said investigations were still ongoing as the task force was still tracing several other suspects at large. Details, however, could not be revealed yet as efforts were still underway to put the probe to rest for the purpose of charging the perpetrators in court.
