BMW changes the face of their entry level SAV

Niche, yes, the first generation had been niche. But now BMW has introduced the second generation X1 and we’re rejoicing just how much the looks has improved. The All-New X1 now bares more style resemblance with its elder X siblings than before and is equipped with the new, efficiency-optimised front-wheel drive platform from the BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel-drive system.

BMW has gifted the car with athleticism with its dynamic wedge shape, angular wheel arches and a more central position of the occupant cell. The X1 now shares the characteristic “six-eye” appearance of the other BMWs on the front while the rear will sport the same L-shaped light strips. The X1 wears 18-inch double spoke light alloy wheels as standard.

Measuring at 4439mm long, 1821mm wide and 1598mm tall, the X1 is now 53mm higher to offer more space and allowing the seats to be raised 40mm offering more safety. There is an additional 37mm of legroom for rear seat occupants due to the transversely mounted engine.

BMW X1 is now powered by sDrive20i, a 2.0-litre BMW TwinPower Turbo technology powerplant capable of developing a max output of 192bhp and a peak torque of 280Nm. It is capable of doing the century sprint in 7.7 seconds and hitting a top speed of 225kph. BMW is proud to say that the engine has a fuel consumption of 5.9-litres per 100km while CO2 emissions stand at 136g/km.

Combined with the BMW EfficientDynamics engine to enhance the driving pleasure, the BMW X1 also uses the BMW EfficentLightweight and sophisticated aerodynamics to further minimise drag and increase the fuel efficiency. The combination of lightweight aluminium used to build the bonnet, bumpers and many other chassis components while air vent control, Air Curtains and wind deflectors on the wheel arches contributes to a Cd value of as low as 0.28.

The BMW X1 is also the first model in Malaysia to offer the upgraded BMW ConnectedDrive. BMW has updated their ConnectedDrive system to offer BMW ConnectedDrive Services and Apps as well as BMW ConnectedDrive Assistance systems. BMW is offering the X1 in five colours, Alpine White, Black Sapphire, Mineral Grey, Chestnut Bronze and Mediterranean Blue. Interior colour schemes include Black, Red Highlight and Mocha for the Leather Dakota upholstery. The X1 sDrive20i will set you back on the road, without insurance for RM279,800.00 and will come complete with the new five years unlimited mileage warranty and free scheduled service program.
