BN and PR should form Parliamentary committee for all ministries

This is the opinion of political analyst Dr Ooi Kee Beng who said this approach is essential because the opposing stands of the two coalitions on various issues should not be looked upon as political hostility.

“These are the opposing stands between those who want the best for the nation but could not agree with the implementation method and because of that, the committee could be a good forum to achieve exactly that,” Ooi told Astro Awani.

He was met after Institute of Southeast Asian Studies’ (ISEAS) 13th General Election result analysis forum here, Monday.

In the 13th General Election, BN won 133 Dewan Rakyat seats, 15 short of attaining two thirds majority, while PR won 89 seats.

Dewan Rakyat needs a two thirds majority to amend the federal constitution while a simple majority is enough to amend other laws.

Meanwhile, when asked to comment on the challenges that PR might have to face while holding power in Penang and Selangor, Ooi said the coalition has to live up to the people’s expectation to govern well in the second term.

“Being a first term government is very different from being a second term government. Certain weaknesses that they showed were acceptable by the general public because that was their first term.

“But this is the second term and they have won again which means people, voters are saying, ’you did well enough but we expect more now’,” said Ooi.

PR won two thirds majority in both states in the 13th General Election.
